DANIELA GUTIERREZ
Daughter in-law of the deceased person Julio Barrios, who immigrated to Queens, New York from Mexico in the 1980s. He worked as a plumber for 20 years. Daniela started living with Julio’s son, Juan when she was thirteen years old after her own father left home. Since then, Daniela has been living with Julio’s family for 17 years. Julio became like a father to Daniela as time went by; she stated that she felt real family love. She described the relationship with Julio, saying, “This is what families do, this is what fathers do.” Now Daniela is almost 30 years old, and she misses Julio so much. During the interview, Daniela shared how deeply Julio meant to his family, friends, and neighbors.
RUTH OTTMAN
Wife of the deceased person David Strug, who was a tenured professor at Yeshiva University, splitting his time between research and his psychotherapy practice. They met when they were in their late 40s through Academia Companion, which is a 90’s dating agency for single scholars in New York City. Ruth stated, “It was perfect for us, because we’re both in the academic field.” They were soulmates to each other for 24 years.
